    FUNGUS INFECTION ON
ALFALFA DIAGNOSED
By Max Smith
The fungus infection on al
falta planis for the past
month has been diagnosed
as pepper spot; the
seems to be attacking virtual
ly all varieties of alfalfa in
stages of growth. Very
nall, brown, sunken lesions
velop on the lower leaves;
turn yellow, dry,
fall from the plant with
the slightest movement. There
is no fungicide federally ap-
proved for the control of this
disease; the factors controll-
ing the infection are moisture
and cool temperatures. When
temperatures go above 75 de-
grees and the humidity drops,
the alfalfa plants should out-
grow the disease. If the crop
iS near maturity, it is best to
harvest the alfalfa and get
what is there at the time, and
hope that the weather condi-
tions will permit a more dis-
ease-free third growth.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
IMPORTANT HOME
SAFETY FEATURE
Fires which start small may
never grow, big if fire extin-
guishers are installed and fa-
mily members learn how to
operate them, say Extension
home management specialists
at Penn State. Home fire ex.
tinguishers can control a
small fire or delay the devel-
opment of a large one until -
help arrives.
Three types of fires are of
concern to families. Class A
fires begin in wood, paper,
textiles, grass, trash and simi-
lar materials. Class B fires are
commonly called grease fires.
These also include fires invol-
.ving gasoline, oils, paints, ker-
osene and solvents. Class C
fires invoive electrical eqwip-
ment.
Pressurized water extin-
guishers are effective on Class
A fires only. Foam extinguish-
ers which contain a mixture
of water, bicarbonate of soda
and a foam stabilizing agent
work only on Class A and B
blazes and will not control a
Class C fire.
Both carbon dioxide and
mu'ti-purpose dry chemical
extinguishers can be used on
all classes of fires, However,
the Extension specialists sug-
gest the multi-purpose variety
may work best in the home.
The multi-purpose dry
chemical variety controls blaz-
es up to 12-feet away. The

Thanks for your Patience and Cooperation
The unbelievable destruction, the magnitude of personal losses,
the terrifying power of tropical storm Agnes will be etched
in people's memories for all time,
Equally memorable has been the understanding of PP&I.’s
problems exhibited by our customers. People desperately in
need of electric service patiently made do while our crews
worked around the clock to restore service. We are
indebted to all who helped speed the job of restoring service
under the worst possible conditions.
Thanks go to other groups which have lent a hand
battling the storm; local police and firemen, the
telephone companies, civilian defense authorities,
the National Guard, municipal cleanup crews, the Red Cross
the press and others. Everybody has been just great
in seeing that our people got every possible
assistance in getting electricity back on the job.
Restoration efforts are still under way and will be for a
while in some areas. Many of the electrical repairs
made have had to be of a temporary nature
requiring follow-up work for months to come,
Despite an unfinished job, we want to say,
“Thanks a million for your patience,
Your help and your understanding.”
