FEBRUARY 2, 1972 CHANGES IN SUPERMARKETS TAKING PLACE RAPIDLY The growing supermarket industry is another example of industry concentration with implications for producers and agriculture. Since its beginnings, the supermarket has changed drastically in all its depart- ments from household items to the frozen food section, says Harold E, Neigh, Exten- sion consumer economist at Penn State. The first supermarkets ap- peared about 1925 and by the late ’30’s, a large segment of the grocery industry had be- come supermarket - minded. One trade paper defines a su- permarket as any self-service store that has annual sales of $500,000 or more. The same paper estimates that -in 1969, 37,180 such stores were doing an estimated 76 percent of the nation’s $82 billion of gro- cery sales, The ten largest supermarket chains control 30 percent of all grocery sales in the Unit. ed States. The smaller inde- pendent grocers and conven- ience stores handle about 18 percent of the total $82 bil- lion in grocery sales. Growth and change in the supermarket industry is im- portant because agricultural cocmmodities must flow thru supermarkets to reach consu- mers. Sales of farm products to supermarkt chains must be in large volumes—making it difficult for small producers to find an outlet for their pro- duct independently, points out the Extension specialist. While some growers may have excellent quality pro- ducts, .they may not have quantity enough to provide the uniformity and continual flow required by the super- market. chain, For these reasons, many growers in Pennsylvania are working together in market- ing organizations to channel their products into the super- market industry.
