2 TUESDAY, JANUARY 25, 1972 — ns ant wan iforms for his men. After they were issued to his soldiers, Frederic went out to review his troops in their new garb. And he almost had a stroke, for when he saw those new uniforms, he noticed that the coat sleeves were dirty and greasy. For his men, like modern toddlers, used the sleeves to wipe their runny noses. And they also cleaned the grease from their mouths af- ter eating by swiping their faces with the coat sleev-s, So Frederic had the coats called in and then command- eered all the tailors of the area to sew sharp pieces of glass or stones on the upper cuff of the coat sleeves. For when his men then ab- sent-mindedly wiped their mouth or nose with the coat sleeve, they’d cut their lips and produce pain. Those sharp stones on the upper cuff of a man’s coat sleeve now have merely grav- itated to the lower side, but are still retained just through the inertia of custom, though they have no practical value any more, And so it is with much church ritual, which usually started with a logical reason, but has been carried along for centuries by custom.
