Landisville; Heisey to State Donegal high school’s track ahd field team—participating in county competition its first year — has been lacking In depth, admittedly, but there never has been any doubt a- bout Martin Heisey! And, Saturday, at McCas- key high school, in the PIAA Section III championships, he walked away with one first place, and a second to earn himself and D.H.S. two par- ticipating places in the big State Championships Satur- day at State College. With a leap of 21-10%2"— just off his county record by 81% inches—he won the long jump title. And, with a high jump of 6 ft. 1 inch he took second in the high jump. All first and second place winners Saturday move to the state meet. : In the long jump, Heisey has been beaten only once Ephrata T ripped With a last-inning two-run double, Bob Sauders and Donegal virtually knocked Ephrata out of the Section I county baseball race Mon- day afternoon, May 17. The two-out blow gave the Indians a 4-3 victory, pluck- ed from the jaws of defeat. The blast came with two out and the Mounts looking into the sunlight of a possible place in the playoffs. Had Ephrata taken the win, it would have placed them in a four-way tie for second place and life in the pennant race. Victory for Donegal gave the Tribe a 5 - 7 record with two games left — Hempfield on Tuesday (of this week) and Penn Manor on Thurs- day. Donegal had scored in the first and third, as had Ephra- ta but the visitors went one up in the fourth. As the home half of the final inning came up, with runners on first and second, Sauders’ blow did the trick. It was his second of 4 times up, including an earlier .trip- le. Scott Zeller and Buzz Yohe also had two hits each, the former including a doub- le. Tom Sargen was the win- ning hurler, The couple will reside in Mount Joy. WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 1971 this year — on an afternoon when things were not going right and even the winner was not stretching near a re- spectable 20 feet. As holder of the county record in the high jump at 6- 4 also, Heisey was not at his best Saturday, going only on- ly 6-1, The winner cleared at 6-2. The Junior Jumper has given up the triple jump for this season and did not par- ticipate despite the fact he has had several wins in that department this season. He feels that he should specialize. Although he will not be eligible to participate in the state meet, Cliff Betty Satur- day at McCaskey, won a 3rd place in the 220, running the distance at 23.8. The winner was clocked at 23.4. Heisey’'s first produced six points; his second was worth four and Betty's third claim- ed three, giving Donegal 13 in the District for a tie for sixth in the Class B competi- tion. The same 13 points in the Class A. section would have bzen good enough for a tie for third. This will be Heisey’s first competition in the big-time schoolboy competition. Two years ago he took part in the Junior Olympics at Quontico. Golf Meets Set Mount Joy Golf association is organizing for its eighth season.
