A visitor to the Bulletin pointed out one of them. He looked into our front win- dow, where there is a size- able display of ‘sale bills” of farm sales to be held in the next mohth or so. “Those: sale bills are a sure sign of spring,” he said with a twinkle. Four Wrestlers In Tourney Finals Four Donegal - wrestlers moved to the finals ot the sectional mat eliminations last weekend at Manheim Township. However, the going was tough and the best showing was by Jeff Witman, who al- most made it in the 1382 pound class. He and Wayne Colyer of Peqgeua Valley wrestled to a 4 . 4 tie and went into an overtime. Colyer, with a near fall in the added per- iod, emerged the winner, 9 to 4. Witman had a bye in the prelims, and them won a 3:25 fall in the semi-finals. In the 127-pound division, Ken Piersol, seeded number one, was decisioned in the finale, 8 - 3, after taking a 13 - 2 decision in the semi- finals. Roy Bixler, 165-pound class dependable, lost a quick fall in 41 seconds in the championship after winning by falls in two earlier maich- es, one in 4:44 and the semi- final in 5:17. Tom Knorr went to the last match but was decision- ed, 10 - 2, by Bill Rohrbach of Manheim Township. Crane the Harlan Tarbell was so heed his timely warning we are tricked by the obvious! “magician’s magician,” about the ease with which Notice how cleverly Herbert Hoover thus deceived the Germans in 1316. And how the president still the “mark up’ strategy! routinely hoodwinks us via CASE E-531: Harlan Tarbel was the ‘magicians magi- cian.” He wrote a set of books on magic which are still tops. But for several years before his death, he would come down to my Bible Class on Sunday at the Chicago Tempie. As a colleague of Houdini Thurston, Blackstone and such great 20th century leg- erdemain artists, he belong- ed to that great era of the- atrical magic. “Dr. Crane,” he said as we had dinner after my Bibie Class, “I find that the Ameri- can public is very gullible. “People are easily deceiv- ed by the obvious. “Thus, the simplier the magical” illusion, the easier they are fooled. “For they ignore the ob- vious as they try to discover some occult or complicated explanation.” HOOVER'S MAGIC Herbert Hoover easily hoodwinked the German ar- my experts by this same use of the obvious, back in 1916. While I was stationed at Smith College in 1927-1929, I learned this story from the professor who occupied the office next to mine. This professor had been on Hoover’s staff while Hoover served as chairman of the Committee for Belgian Re- lief. As a famous Quaker, Hoo- ver was. respected. on both sides of the English Channel, try had won decisions to move to the Saturday night title match. He had won, 6.0 ard 7-2. Other Donegal entries drop- ped out in the opening rounds. Joe Wivell, at 120 pounds, lost to Champion Jeff Duke of Manheim Twp. and McCurdy to- Rick Gibble, E-towr’s champ in the 133. so was permitted to pass back and forth at will. One day, as he was ready to go across to London, some of his aides begged him to bring back the latest copies of the London newspapers. But Mr. Hoover knew the Germans would go through his luggage most thoroughly on his return from London. So how do you suppose he planned to bring back copies of the latest Londen news: papers? : Well, Mr. Hoover was clev- er. So he took a pair of mud- dy old rubber overshoes and carefully wrapped each one in a copy of that day's Lon. don newspaper. Then he placed these atop his clothing and sealed his suitcase. When he reached the Ger- man lines, his luggage was instantly opened and eagerly inspected for forbidden ma- terials. : The German experts un- rapped the packages contain- ing his muddy overshoes. They examined the soles to see if any secret docu- ments were hidden in slits in the heels. They also felt inside toes of the overshoes. Then they obligingly wrap- ped each one in the newspa- per in which he had origin- ally placed it. For the newspaper was so obvious that they didn’t pay attention to it! They regarded’ it as mere: ly convenient wrapping pa- per. Herbert. Hoover had figur- the ed that they would thus ig-|" nore the obvious in their in- tensive: search for something irgeniously secreted in some hidden spot! In ‘like manner our presi- dent routinely uses the “mark up” trick to deveive us American. voters. He thus asks for $10 bil- lion more than - he needs! This then lets our, Congress- men cut back $5 billion as they gloat over - not being mere “rubber stamps’ of the president. - ® FURNITURE Eberly Furniture & Floor Covering ELIZABETHTOWN R.D. 3 1% Mi.
