For, in facet, it is not a silver shovel at all. It is chrome plated. Back in the fall of 1952 Donegal Jointure turned the first shovel of dirt for the new high school building. It was a late fall day and boys and girls from the ' various schools in the district were dismissed from school to see the important ceremony —- out in a corn field where the crop only a few days before had been standing. The shovel selected for the official turning of the earth was one which the contractor had in his tool trunk and when Dan Wolgemuth and the late Al Seiler used it to start the job it was ‘just! an- placed on display. In fact, he even offered to have the chrome job done. And, he did. Since that time the shovel has been in the office of the supervising principal but al- though the school has built buildings since that time, theré never were any ground- breaking ceremonies. Now, after the ground- breaking this fall, when the shovel will have another “notch” to its credit, there will be even more sentiment attached to this particular shovel and it is just possible that this important piece of equipment may get a per- manent and more important place for display safekeeping. and for One of the motivating forces of individuals and of groups is a sincere and earnest respect and admiration for heroes. Little boys have heros who range from high school athletes to big league stars. Older men look with respect and affection upon political giants and national figures. Everyone counts heros. patriots and martyrs as Yet, in 1968, where are the heros? As a nation, and as a civilization, we have cut down our heros. We have humanized them, we have leveled them, we have put them under microscopes and found that they factually were men with feet of clay. We have boiled out the starch of heroism by heating the fire of close inspection. (Turn to page 2)"
