SEPTIC TANK AND CESSPOOL CLEANING Phone 367-1256 11 Sager Rd.. Elizabethtown Why Do Nuns Live Longer? Why do nuns live longer than their secular sisters? Why do they suffer less from gastrointestinal dis- eases such as ulcers, gall stones? Because life in a nunnery, according to James T. Nix, M.D., surgery pro- fessor, and Con J. Fecher, Ph.D. of Louisiana State University, is healthier. The researchers base their obser- vation on continuing studies (1964 through 1967) of 108,847 nuns living in 223 religious communities, and on an analysis of 1,000 death records. The sisters live longer in part because they live more abstemiously and work for more of their lives. They do not smoke and they take a'cohol only on feast days. Their diet is lower in cho- lesterol than the average diet. The nuns most suscept- ible to gall bladder attacks are, Dr. Nix notes, the Mother Provincials who go on frequent trips to their orders’ missions. They are served richer food, usually with a high fat content. As a result they get what Dr. Nix calls ‘Mother Provincial syndrome.’ Strikingly fewer nuns died of arterioscerotic heart dis- _ease SAFETY ATTITUDE Attitude is the most im- portant safeguard against hazards around the house, remind Penn State Exten- sion home management spe- cialists. Think constantly about the safe, sensible way of doing things and it will become a habit. Developing this habit will help to re- duce the number of acci- dents in your home. THE Prayer of the Week The evening prayer this week is by Wilfrid A. Rowell: “O God, my heavenly Father, who never slumbers nor sleeps, I now render unto thee the account of my stewardship of life for this day. Pardon my mistakes and neglected duties. Grant thy blessing on all that I heve sought to do that is good. “I commit myself to thy wise and loving care for this night. During its quiet hours renew and refresh my body, mind and soul. Remove all fears, anxieties, and vain regrets. Fulfill the deepest longings of my spirit according to thy love and wisdom. May the rest of this night prepare me for a richer and more useful life tomorrow. Amen.” Lester Mumma, Manheim Kenneth Zurin, RD 2, Mt.
