FLUORIDES AID
What is the state of dental
health of five-and-six-year
olds who have drunk fluori-
dated water for all or most
of their lives?
Initial examinations of
youngsters from fluorides-
enriched New burgh, New
York, the American Dental
Association reported, show-
ed that 42 percent of them
had no decay in primary or
permanent teeth compared:
to only 18 percent of young-
sters from neighboring King-
ston which does not have a
fluoridated water supply.
Kingston children averaged
8.3 times as many decayed,
missing, and filled perma-
nent teeth when first seen
by the dentist. Kingston
children needed an average
of more than twice as many
dental services as the New-
burgh group.
Still another use of the
chemical was reported re-
cently. According to ear,
nose, and throat specialist
Dr. George Shambaugh, of
Northwestern University,
fluoride helps reinforce the
cochlea, the spiral-shaped
bone in the inner ear that
conducts sound. In some
people that bone softens due
to a condition known as
cochlear otosclerosis, impair-
ing hearing.

- MANHEIM News NOTES -
PLAN SUBDIVISIONS
The Manheim Boro Plan-
ning Commission approved a
recommendation recently to
approach borough council
council about preparation of
a borough subdivision ordi-
nance,
The commission’s plans for
subdivision controls follow
closely on the heels of its
new zoning ordinance. Speci-
fic actions of the subdivision
plan have not been worked
out yet, according to com-
mission members.
In other business the com-
mission discussed the boro
sidewalk ordinance which
was drawn up in 1943. The
ordinance is believed to be
outdated, and commission
members are seeking ways to
bring it up to date.

You can tell whether a
stray egg is cooked or raw
by using this simple trick:
place the egg on its side
and spin it like a top. If
the egg spins on an even
keel, it’s cooked. If it wob-
bles, it’s raw!
