ge back again‘ to 1938 — in
that year there were approx-
imately 4,000,000 registered
motor vehicles in Pennsyl-
vania, while this year finds
almost 12,000,000 registered
vehicles in the state of Penn-
ylvania. In other words,
since 1938 the number of
automobiles in our state has
increased by 300% while the
number of state policemen
has increased by 44%.
Bear in mind, that these
above figures pertain to traf-
fic problems only. We all
know that crime (organized
and other) in this common-
wealth has increased many
fold since 1938. There is no
doubt in my mind that prior
Legislatures and prior Gov-
ernors have also been dere-
lict in their attention to the
Pennsylvania State Police.
However, prior sins are no
excuse for present sinning.
The Democrat leadership in
the House must bear the full
responsibility fir not increas-
ing the complement of the
state police during the year
1966. I am told by State Po-
lice Headquarters that if
they had receved authoriza-
tion for the additional 300
men on July 1 of last year
that these men, by now,
would have all finished their
training at the Hershey Aca-
demy and be throughout the
Commonwealth providing
additional service and pro-
tection to our 12 million citi-
zens.
Playing “politics” is one
thing but playing politics
with human safety and pro:
tection is quite another. The
state pilice are important to
law enforcement throughout
Pennsylvania, and they must
be given the manpower to
do their job.
