YOUR LEGASLATOR'S % REPORT a oe cae RICHARD A. ENYDER STATE SENATOR Things are happening in Lancaster County! Some years ago, mo one would have predicted state- wide interest in Drumore Township. It was a quiet and friendly area on the Susque- hanna River, with income largely from farming, and timberland on river hills. Several weeks ago, Susque- | hannock State Park, a scenic look-out point with picnic groves, was formally opened to the public, after a spirited effort by local area residents to establish it. Dr. Maurice K. Goddard, Secretary of Forests and Wa- ters, was there, saying he wished he could open a park like this every week in Penn- sylvania. Local residents were warm in their admira- tion of the conversion of the area, which was remembered as a honeysuckle - and - pois- on-ivy-covered area in which copperheads abounded. The travelers alighting there now have a magnificent river view, with Mt. Johnson Island visible on clear days, the atomic plant in York County plainly seen, and the work on the gigante $63 mil- lion project in full swing nearby. Upriver, the site of the proposed Holtwood bridge is visible. The park shows what a group of determined citizens can do. The group, headed by Robert K. Mowrer, worked for nine years to bring this about, and Dr. Goddard con- cedes it was their persistent urging that brought the re- sults. Dr. Goddard was proud of the state’s work in this area. Pointing to the sturdy wood- en bench-and-table combina- tions, he said each cost only $20, with state timber, and that, ordinarily, the cost to a manufacturer would be several times as much. #* * * Residents in other parts of our county are also progress- ively alert. Mount Joy re- cently dedicated its new pub- lic library, adjoining the H. G. Carpenter residence, and this had the enthusiastic ap- proval of State Librarian Er- nest Doerschuk, who is a Lancaster Countian also, re- siding in Millersvlle. At the ceremony, Doer- schuk pointed out the facili- ties available to any literate person who wants a book or information, and the net- work by which the librarian in Mount Joy, for example, can get from the Lancaster Library, which, in turn, can obtain from the state library or other sources the material desired. As a result, the av- erage person has at his whim greater and faster informa- tion than royalty or univer- sity heads enjoyed a century ago. Landis Valley Museum, a state installation, has enjoy- ed the growing popularity of “Craft Days’. Visitors come to see farm and household handicrafts practiced by per- sons who know these arts. The popularity of this at- traction shows again that people prefer to come to a “living museum” in which things are happenings, than to pass by a glass-case as- semblage of exhibits not acti- vated by the impact of a personality. This same belief is what is thought to have influenced the State Museum Commis- sion in preferring Strasburg as a site for the proposed railroad museum. People will some to ride a railroad because they are participants in an experience rather than mere onlookers. A state mu- seum nearby promises to at- tract many of these people who are already there to ride the trains. " * * District Attorney Wilson Bucher, Columbia, has been suggested for appointment to the Presidential Crime Com- misson by Senator Hugh Scott. Whether the appointment will occur depends, of course upon the type of balance needed in the presidential commission and upon the whims of political chance. If the President wants a prosecutor from a county which has had a commendab- ly low amount of serious crime, Mr. Bucher would qualify admirably. The FBI records show that our serious offenses here occurred at a rate of only 264 per 100,000 population as compared with a rate of 767 in Pennsylvan- ia as a whole and 1198 in the nation as a whole. The absence of organized vice in Lancaster County has been due to the splendid ef- forts of our prosecuting offi- cials through the years, all of whom deserve credit for keeping an unbroken chain of enforcement against rack- eteering elements. It is quite likely that this is one of the things which has made our area attractive to expan- ding enterprise, and accounts for our high employment and our economic stability. * * * The Governor and Mrs. Scranton have been holding social events at the so-called “mansion” at Indiantown Gap. The house itself is large, bp ordinary standards, and might be fairly compared to the home of the leading doc- tor or businessman in the average Pennsylvania bor- ough. It is pleasantly and tastefully arranged. However, it is inadequate for the obligations of chief executive of a state of Penn- sylvania’s size. If the Govern- § or is expected to do much en- tertaining, in the interest of coaxing outside industry in, | for example, it is hardly im- pressive, One item is of interest to Lancaster County: In the = main living room, over the PAGE SEVEN EE rn ———— fireplace, is an old print of ' the birthplace of Robert Ful- | ton, clearly identified as be- ing in Lancaster County. There are a number of other historical prints in the room,| but this one is the largest. The shelves of books on eith-' er side are largely on histor- ical and biographical sub- jects, and contemporary vol- umes on assorted fields. w To Show Slides Of Storm Aid Ralph R.
