Eating Out Helps
Young Children
If you introduce young
boys and girls to new foods
at home, they will be ready
to accept school lunches or
restaurant food. By grade
school they need

choices, says Louise W. Ham-
ilton, extension nutrition
specialist, of Penn State U.
When a set menu is offer-
ed for school lunch, a child
needs to know it is important
for him to pick up his pint
of milk and drink it. Devel-

TREMENDOUS TRIFLES
THE STORM THAT POINTED
OUT THE KIDNAPER'S LAIR
Because a storm caused a mail
plane to veer off its ‘course, a des-
perate and deadly gang of kid-
napers were caught in their own
hideout.
Charles F. Urschel, millionaire
oil man of Oklahoma City was
Kidnaped the night of July 23, 1933
by two men with submachine guns.
He was taken from the back porch
of his home where he was playing
cards with his wife and friends.
Days later the kidnapers sent a
ransom note demanding $200,000.
A friend of Urschel’s delivered the
money in a suitcase to a man in
Kansas City. The next evening
Charles Urschel was released near
Norman, Oklahoma, eighteen miles
south of his home.
Urschel was free now, but the
kidnapers were still at large with
the $200,000 ransom money. There
were no clues until Urschel told
his story:
The kidnapers had tied his hands
and taped his eyes. Urschel had no
sense of direction, but the ride was
long. His confinement was in a
roughly boarded room at a farm-
house. The kidnapers let him keep
his wristwatch. It was to play a
prominent part in bringing the
criminals to prison.
“At 9:30 each morning a plane
flew over the farmhouse,” Urschel
Id officers. “In the evening at
5 another plane came over. The
day (July 30) before the ran-
n was paid the morning plane
In't come over.”
The airlines were checked. The
2g of American Airlines showed
1at a mail plane flying between
Jallas and Amarillo, Texas had
detoured a section on that Sunday
to miss a storm. The section was in
the vicinity of Paradise, Texas.
Officers closed in quickly. At
dawn on August 12, the farm-
house was raided and Harvey
Bailey, notorious Southwest crim-
inal was apprehended. Also taken
was Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Shannon
and their young son, Armon
Shannon.
On the same day Albert Bates,
a notorious criminal, was picked
up in Denver. A few days later
officers captured George “Machine
Gun” Kelly and his wife, Kathryn.
But it was a storm that made it
possible to start the ball rolling.

put in front of him will save
many problems.
A child is apt to accept
new foods readily if he is
introduced frequently to new
foods at home with no
special issues made. This
doesn’t mean he will always
like every food but he need
not complain either, reminds
Miss Hamilton.
The more experience grade
school children have with
eating in other homes, res-
taurants, or school lunches,
the more likely they will be
to accept various foods as
teenagers and adults. Child-
ren may find that Mrs.
Smith's casserole, which is-
n't like mother’s, may be
good. This may be a time to
let children make some of
their own sandwiches or sal-
ads.
