Proves Valuable
To prevent a hot humid
kitchen, the most dependable
year-round ventilation is the
mechanized type, points out
Helen E. Bell, extension
home management specialist,
Penna. State University.
To remove hot, moist air
from sink, dishwasher, range
and dining areas, install a
multiple-switch controlled
forced exhaust system. This
will take out cooking odors,
smoke, and grease particles.
A fan with a capacity higher
than is needed to change the
air in your kitchen every 3
minutes is the most effective,
Miss Bell explains.
Exhaust equipment can be
mounted in the ceiling, in
the wall, in cabinets, and in
range hoods. A hood exhaust
costs about 50 percent more
than other types. If you have
a large kitchen, you could
use both a ceiling and a hood
exhaust. Keep the duct run
to the outside as straight as
possible and less than 10 ft.
Do not vent the exhaust to
the attie, cautions Miss Bell.
Grease particles will make it
1 a fire hazard and will be food
for insects.
If you decide on a range
hood, install it so the lower
edge is in line with the top
of your head, she advises.
This allows you to see what
you are cooking without
ducking. If you install a
range hood in an island or
peninsula, be sure it is high
enough not to interfere with
your view. This also makes
it" easier to clean the hood
and filters and to replace the
light bulbs.
Nonduct hood fans are de-
signed to clean circulated
air and remove odors. They
do not remove heat and mois-
ture, Miss Bell adds.
SHOWER CONTROL
There are three types of
water controls for showers.
Most desirable is the thermo-'!
statically controlled mixing |
valve which provides water]
an any desired temperature
and protects against danger
from violent fluctuations in
water pressure. A regular
mixture valve works on the
same principle as the single-
lever faucet, and tempers wa-
ter. Finally there is the reg-
ular two-valve system where
the bather tempers the water
himself.
