‘Develop New
Potato Variety
Pennchip, a new potato
variety for chips and table
use, has been announced by
[the Agricultural Experiment
| Station at The Penn State U.
On the basis of
tests, Pennship is superior to
varieties now grown in Penn-|
chip |
industry, according to W. R.|
syivania for the potato
Mills, Station researcher who
developed the variety.
Designed to replace Kenne-
bec and Russet Rural for the|
potato chip industry, Penn-
chip has surpassed consistent-
ly the standard varieties in
| chipping quality, Dr. Mills
| says, both at harvest and af-
ter cold storage.
Evaluations during the past
seven years have shown
Pennchip to be high yielding,
resistant to late blight and
scab, and probably immune
to wild mosaic.
Seed supplies will be in-
creased next summer, he an-
nounces, and should be avail-
able for planting in the
spring of 1965.
Yields of Pennchip have
been about equal to that of
Katahdin, Kennebec, and
Russet Rural, Dr. Mills re-
ports. Cooperating on the de-
velopment were the Wise Po-
tato Chip Company of Ber-
wick and Barnett Brothers of
Coudersport.
In chipping studies, Samp-
les of Pennchip and Russet
Rural were held five months
at 38-40 degrees F., then re-
moved to 70 degrees F. and
chipped immediately and at
weekly intervals for 6 weeks.
Pennchip made excellent
chips after three weeks at
70 degrees, and continued to
do so to the end of the trial.
Chips made from Russet Rur-
al were very dark after 3
weeks storage and border-
line in color after 5 or 6
weeks when the chipping
tests were ended.
Present Flag
Mrs. Elmer Zink, 440 East
Front Street, has presented a
new 50-star American flag to
the Marietta Elementary
School to be used on a stain-
less steel flagpole recently in-
stalled by the Donegal Un-
ion school board.
The flag was used to drape
the coffin of Elmer Zink, a
World War I veteran who
died earlier this year.
The school has been with-
out a uagpole since an addi-
tion several years ago. The
new pole, approximately 35
feet high, is guaranteed to
last a life time. The cost to
the school district was $500.
