E. Oakes, PP&L’s board chairman and chief executive officer. In announcing the scholar. ships, Oakes emphasized that today, more than ever, the nation needs college-trained young people for the thought. crealivity and evaluation so vital to building a continual ly better society. PP&L offers scholarships under its broad program of aid to higher edu. cation, recognizing that the cost is often a substantial de- terrent to many qualified young people who seek a college education. The utility’s most extensive program — the Independent College Scholarship Program —provides 10 scholarships of $700 a year for study at any of 15 independent colleges and universities in the Com- pany’s service area. Under the other program—the State College Scholarship Program —PP&L offers five scholar ships of $250 annually for study at any of four state colleges in the Company's service area — Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg, Lock Have en and Millersville. The prine cipal objective of this pro- gram is to help to meet the ever-growing need for highly qualified teachers. Competition under these programs is open only to members of the current year’s senior class. Eligibility for scholarships is conditional upon scholastic achievement, graduation from an accredits ed high school or its equivals ent, and financial need. Under both programs, P P & L does not participate in the determination of scholars ship winners. . An independ- ent Scholarship Awards Coms mittee chooses the winners, who are then notified by the Company. Materials exp:»ining the PP&L scholarship, program are available at any high school in Central Eastern Pennsylvania. A brochure outlining the programs in de« tail can be obtained either from high school principals or guidance counselors, or by contacting the nearest PP&L office. Since 1947, PP&L has been able to assist a total of 150 deserving young people in their search for a higher edue cation in their chusen fields, TO CONVENTION Mrs. Kathryn R.
