SERVICES - [On Bikes Die

WEST MAIN STREET MOUNT JOY
500 Persons
of those killed were between
the ages of 5 and 14 years’,
said Edward P. Curran, Key-
stone's Safety Director. “The
next highest fatality rate oc-|’
curred among persons aged |
15 to 24, with fifty dead.
“Those grim figures indi-
cate clearly the pressing nec-
essity for intensifying efforts |
to make motorists and bike
riders alike more
ware of the dangers inherent
in having children involved
in highway traffic.
“To begin with, bikes should
always be in first-class mech-
anical condition and have
lights and warning reflectors.
And cyclists must be duly im-
pressed with the fact that
they must obey all traffic
signs and signals and observe
all common-sense rules laid
down for their safety.
“Motorists and trucks also
must be kept on the alert for
bikeriding children. Particul-
arly during the hours when
youngsters are on the way to
and from school, And, when
they can be expected to be
riding after school
their home
Children often prove
cable and unpredictable in
their quick actions and re-
actions, so the motor-vehicle
driver must, always be cer-
tain not to take a bicyclist’s
intentions or riding ability |
too much for granted. Be|
ready to stop quickly at|
all times, should be his cre-
do.”
Eligibility for G. I. loans
does not extend beyond July |
25, 1967 for any veterans of
World War II, nor beyond
January 31, 1975 for any
Korean veteran, the Veterans
Administration cautions.
