{Prayer Meeting,
DO LUTHERANS
IDOLIZE A BOOK?
Do Lutherans accept the Holy Bible as
the inspired Word of God? Resoundingly,
“Yes!”
remember The Bulletin

But: Are Lutherans “fundamentalists?”
Or do they doubt the human mind's God-
given task of inquiring into the Scriptures?
Emphatically, “Nol”
Lutherans resist with their whole beings
any effort to substitute human intellect
for the revealed Word. But they are in the forefront of the effort to make human intellect
the servant of the Word.
Lutherans do not believe that the human mind can evolve religious truth. But they
do believe that the mind is an instrument for receiving whatever knowledge of His
mysteries God chooses to reveal.
Lutherans do not believe the Bible is the sum total of all possible human knowledge.
But they do believe the Bible is the infallible Word in relicion.
“In the beginning, God created...” That is a religious truth, accepted without
reservation. But how He created — that may be a scientific question open for human
inquiry. 1
Do Lutherans “worship the book?” Certainly not. “The Bible is the manger in which
the Christ-child lies,” said Martin Luther, “and we do not worship the manger, we
worship the Christ!”
For four centuries, Lutheran scholarship has availed itself of every tool that can
aid in understanding the message of Scripture. But this is its boundary: All Scripture
is understood in the light of Christ — for He is the Word, made flesh.
It you would like to consider studying the Scriptures’ message in a pastor's
tion class, fill in and mail the coupon.

they are going to try to do... their
hopes and dreams.
They are brave words, all of
them... brave dreams. And like all
parents, I pray that most of them
will come true. But I know that in
times of failure, my Ellen will
have an added strength because of
her Faith, and her devotion to the
Church.
How glad, how thankful, I am
for that!
