OUT ON A LIM
By Stumpy McCulloch

Man, it's
of the woods these days! It's so cold
that even the wind is howlin’ about
. Ol' Hannibal says winter is the
season when you keep your house as
hot as it was in the summer when
you complained about it!
* * *
But the winter months give me
a little time to work on my wood
lot. These days I'm cutting a few
trees for the local pulp mill!
% Ww 0%
Amazing things are happening in
the lumber industry these days. For
instance, did you know the industry
has now developed more than 4000
wood derivatives, which are used in
such widely scattered products as
asphalt shingles and vanilla ice cream?
*
Today, they tell me, plywood is
che fastest-growing building mate-
rial in the country. New plywood
products include low-priced par-
ticle board, which is made from
chips and shavings, and plastic-
coated plywood with color panels,
These new products are increasing
the demand for lumber, and raising
the price we tree farmers can get
for our trees!
"kW
But that's not all. A lot of com-
panies are now packaging their prod-
ucts with a special kind of paper
which provides protection against
moisture, re, and rodents instead of
drums, Others are using fiberboard
cartons instead of wooden crates.
* x *
Nowadays, industry is making
products out of about 75 per cent
of every tree we cut—as opposed to
about 30 per cent in 1935. They're
using sawdust and shavings tor
making plastics, glues, and hard-
boards. From bark, they're building
“cork” tile, insecticides and floor
wax. Stumps and scraps are being
used for hardboard, rayon, sugars
and alcohol.
% Lk XK
As one feller puts it, the lumber
industry is growing fast because of
man's resourcefulness grafted on na- |
ture's resources.” And that means a
better income from our tree farms
and wood lots!
kK *%
“Dagnabbit, young feller,” OI
Ezra spluttered, “why did you tell
nze this stuff was toothpaste?”
“Cause it is toothpaste,’ the drug-
gist said.
“No it ain't” said Ezra. “I tried |
for half an hour this morning, and
I'll be durned if it would make my
teeth stick in!”

= If you think this Chieftain Pontiac looks out of place in the low-price field, you've got plenty of
company. But there it stands . . . in solidly with the so-called low-priced three—a big, bold, beautiful
eye-opener with not a thing to remind you of its very modest cost. Start with looks. Here's the distinction of
clean, unfrenzied, straight-to-the-point Star Flight lines that are built in, not improvised. But it's in the
performance department that the price guesses really run wild! Drive it'and see for yourself. Pontiac's

big 347 cu. in., 10 to 1 compression ratio V-8 doesn’t know what strain is, no matter what you demand
of it. New precision-touch handling makes “driving effort’’ a term only. for your memory book. And
the Chieftain’s 122-inch-wheelbase Level-Line Ride is so smooth that only the passing road signs
remind you that you're earth-bound. In fact, nothing in the low-price field even comes close in power,
wheelbase or features! If you think all this is beyond your reach, a visit to your Pontiac dealer for om
a talk about price will put you in that wonderful club of Pontiac owners who have discovered that it's
<=
rewriting the book in the low-price field!
