GREEN BOOK
A veritable green gold
mine of vital Holstein statis-
tics has been published by
The Holstein-Friesian Associ
ation of America.
Volume 12 of the Type and
Production Year Book - an-
nual “green book’ of Regis-
tered Holstein performance
in official breed improve-
ment programs - came off the
press last week.
Stepped-up interest and
participation in the national
Holstein organization's ex-
tensive breed improvement
work is reflected in the fact
12 contains 1,-
720 pages - up from 1,627 in
Volume 11 issued last year.
The new volume - a valu-
able tool in the continuous
selection of bloodlines, famil-
ies and individual animals so
vital to successful dairy cat-
tle breeding - lists the offic-
ial type classification and/or
production records of daugh-
ters of 17,104 Holstein sires.
This basic “how did they
milk and what did they look
like?” information adds up to
66.000 production records,
25.000 Classification break-
downs and daughter-dam
comparisons on 1,365 Hol-
stein bulls.

Longer lasting cows - in-

exacting economics of pres-

spotlighted in a recent re-
port of The Holstein-Friesian
Association of America.
Dr. George R. Barrett, Su-
perintendent of the organiza-
tion's Advanced Registry De-
partment, has announced
that 107 more registered Hol-
steins have qualified for rec-
ognition as outstanding life-
time producers.
Included in the group are
17 cows with career produc-
tion totals of more than
150,000 lbs. of milk - rough-
ly six times the lifetime out-
put of the average dairy cow.
Ninety other registered
Holsteins have hit the 100,-
000 1b. mark - in itself a
coveted milestone of produc-
tion persistence - on official
test.
Dr. Barretff reported that
the 107 newest Holstein lon-
gevity records were complet-
ed in 25 different states —
from Maine to California and
from Arkansas and North
Carolina to Oregon and Mon-
tana.
All were made in Herd

cultural colleges.
