Ten years ago flying was|
considered a hobby only. |
Airplanes were for the weal-
thy ’sportsmen pilots’ who
found flying interesting but
did not expect to derive util-
ity from their craft. Howev-
er a great change has come
about during the last five
years or so. Industry has a-
dopted the airplane as a
practical means of transpor-
tation. Smal] one man busi
nesses, medium sized indus-
tries, and large multi-million
‘dollar corporations, all are
buying and using airplanes,
from the smaller single en-
gine Piper tri-Pacer or Ces-
sna 170 on up to the Doug-
las DS-3 and other airline
type equipment. A whole
flock of new ‘light twins’ has
been developed and finds a
ready market; the Piper
‘Apache’ at $35,000, the Ces-|
sna ‘310°, at $55,000, the]
Beechcraft ‘Twin Bonanza’,
the De Haviland ‘Dove’, the|
‘Aero Commander’, one of

And, although some con-
sider Lancaster County a lit-|
tle old fashioned, we do have
some company owned air-|
planes here too. Progressive
minded firms such as Arm-
strong Cork, New Holland
Machine, Eshelman Feed,
and Anima] Trap Co. have
owned planes for some years.
Newer users are E. R. Noll,
H. R. Miller & Co., and Me-
Minn Industries. And so it is
going, competition forces the
adoption of more efficient
methods, and old fashioned
ways of travel are giving
way to the airplane.
On a recent chick delivery
flight into New York state
we had planned one of the
stops at the airport close by
a town of about 12,000 pop-
ulation, but just before de-
parture we learned that the!
airport was no longer in op-
eration, and an alternate air-
port at a smaller town was
selected for the delivery. It|
is difficult to understand,
considering the growing use|
of business airplanes, how
even a small town can afford |
to be without at least some
sort of airport facilities. Bus- |
iness men using airplanes
frequently felt their strong-|
est impressions of a commu-
nity by the type of service
and facilities they encounter
at the local airport.
