Telephones To Be
Converted Next Year
According to Henry Y. Smith,
president of the Columbia Tele-
phone Company, the company
has started changing dial num
ber plates and telephone num-
ber cards in preparation for a
major change in exchange des
ignations effective in Lancaster
County October 21
In the local company’s terri
tory the Mount Joy and Eliza
bethtown exchanges will be
converted next year but the
Columbia, Marietta and Mount
ville exchanges will be convert-
ed this vear. The subscribers’
telephone numbers will only be
changed by the addition of a
central offic name preceding
the number such as Columbia
will be MUtua! 4-1385
After October 20 it will be
necessary to dial local numbers
adjacent free exchanges using
the first two letters of the new
central office name followed by
the usual five digits. On toll
calls the operator is given the
complete number to be called
by saying Mutual 4-1385
The name and call letters for
the Mount Joy exchange has
not been disclosed by the Col-
umkia office since the change
will not be effective until next
year.
The new numbering system
is part of a nation-wide toll-
dialing system, developed over
the years by the nation’s tele-,
phone companies, systems, asso-
ciations and telephone , equip-|
