Since the age of eleven, Ten-

offenses starting
and running the
ies of
petty larceny
gamut of burglary, armed rob-
bery, theft from interstate ship-
ment, second degree murder
and prison escape
As far as escapes are concern-

years later effected an ingen-
ious escape. Tenuta, employed]
in the prison as a locksmith,|
had with
gled sections of pipe to
cells concealed in pants legs.
From these they constructed a
ladder. On the night of the es-
cape they left dummies in their
beds. Hair was cut from a
brush, and scap was used to|
make the hair stick to pieces of|
paper formed in the shape of |
heads. Earphones from the pris-|
on radio system were placed]
over the ears, and each dummy
was placed facing the wall sof
as to appear to be a person lis-
tening to the radio. The ladder,!
however, broke: Tenuto was in-
‘jured, and he was caught the
next day in a nearby house
where he had been forced to
hide because of his injured feet.
Again in 1945, Tenuto, to-
gether with his new-found
friend, Williz “The Actor” Sut-|
ton, and other inmates, was in-|
volved in a spectacular tunnel |
escape from the Eastern State
Penitentiary Two months la-|
