Spring Blossoms
Expected On
Schedule
Harrisburg -PNS- Provided
weather conditions are favor-
able, thousands of acres of
cherry, peach and apple blos-
soms will be putting on their
annual beauty show the latter
part of next month, the Depart-
ment of Agriculture noted this
week.
First reports from the south-
castern commercial fruit grow-
ing areas of the state indicate
thats blossoming this year
should be just about on sched-
ule.
Many cherry, peach and ap-
ple orchards, each with more
than 100 acres of trees, can be
seen at blossom time in the
Adams-Franklin-York, the Le-
high-Berks and later in the
Erie County fruit belts.
Fruit prospects at the mom-
ent look fairly favorable, ob-
servers say, although growers
will be on the anxious seat un-
til about the middle of May, re-
calling serious damage from
freezing weather in late April
and carly May in some other
years.
Cold weather in some sec-
tions during the early part of
March retarded bud formation
on some fruit trees, which may
have a tendency to escape
freeze damage should a quick
snap appear in the immediate
future.
Fruit blossom time each
year becomes a bigger and big-
ser spectacle for Pennsylvani-
ans to view - some families ev-
en planning vacations around
that time. This year is not ex-
pected to be any exception, the
department believes.

Public Schools
Receive Praise
For Traffic Safety
Harrisburg -PNS- Pennsylva-
nia’s public schools this week
drew the commendation of the
State Department of Public In-
struction for their contribution
to community traffic safety.
Said a spokesman for the de-
partment:
“We believe that our child-
ren do a pretty good job as
pedestrians, especially on their
way to and from school each
day. Most teachers devote time
to the traffic safety problem.
and help children develop safe
practices for walking and
ing bicycles.”
The department

helping thousands of youngsters
to appreciate the dangers of to-

commented.
It was pointed out that thry

the high schools, more and
more young people are learning
how to operate cars gafely and
courteously.
“The values of well-planned
activities in the schools will un- -
