‘being hit by a stray bullet, and
in the confusion MAX HEI-
MOVITZ disappeared and has
not yet been found by the po-
lice since that August night.
Philadelphia detectives deter-
mined that HEIMOVITZ, better
known as MAX HERMAN, has
been the man behind the gun
md behind the gun and imme-
diately a fragnet was put out
in a vain effort to apprehend
the murderer.
In 1948, information was re-
ceived indicating that HERMAN
or HEIMOVITZ, had left the
state, and the FBI entered the
investigation charging the fugi-
tive with Unlawful Flight to
Avoid Prosecution for Murder.
HEMOVITZ was well-known
as a numbers writer and part-
time jewelry salesman, but the
reason for the shooting was ob-
scure, Some claimed that it
was because of a personal
grudge that MAX had against
the two; others claimed that it
was an offshoot of a local num-
bers writers’ quarrel. The fugi-
tive has a long criminal record
‘dating back to 1932, and in-
cludes blackmain, extortion,
carrying concealed deadly wea-
pons, and operating an illegal
lottery.
