special safety citation Friday
awarded the Post Office Dept.
by the National Safety Council
for the department's safe driv-!
ing record in 1954. |
The presentation will be made
in Mr. Summerfield's office at
9:30 A. M. by A. E. Stoddard,
President of the Union Pacific
Railroad and a Trustee of the
National Safety Council. The
Postmaster General will accept
the award on behalf of the 100-
,000 Postal people who last
year drove the Department's
| 85,000 vehicles to a new safety
record for the Postal Establish-
ment. |
Formerly the Post Office De-|
partment possessed one of the]
worst accident records in the
entire Federal Government. |
Upon learning this, Mr: Sum-
merfield shortly after he assum-
ed offic2, instituted the Depart-
ment’s first intensive safety pro-
gram which included safe driv-
ing instruction as well as driv-
er examination and physical ro-
action tests.

They were given top priority

to get a program going,” he ad-|
ded. “This program is only one,
year old today and yet the rec-
ord it has establishad is extra-

“For example, in the last
quarter of fiscal 1954, accidents
involving Postal vehicles were
down 11 percent and accident
, costs to the Department reduc-
ed 24 per cent. At some instal-|
lations these roductions were
{ as much as 50 per cent in the
number of accidents and 75 per
