Rain Needed Soon
As Farmers Face
Drought Condition
By Pennsylvania News Service
Pennsylvania's parched and
drying farm crops continued to
parch during the week as scat-
tered showers in some sections
of the state helped little if at
all.
Rain is needed soon unless
farmers of the Keystone State
are to face another disastrous
summer drought.
Meanwhile elsewhere on the
Pennsylvania farm front farm-
ers during the week were main-
ly engaged in cutting second
crop hay, cultivating corn and
harvesting wheat and winter
oats.
Corn fields are spotty but on
the whole have fairly good col-
or. Fields are showing tassels
in the south and central por-
tions of the state and nearly all
have been cultivated for the
last time.
Marketings of sweet corn is
now under way in growing
quantity and some tomatoes
are beginning to appear on the
stands in the southeast.
Tomatoes look good general-
ly but some fields are reported
thin, with high temperatures
affecting the set. Potatoes
generally good except
north central counties where
vines have started to wilt from
the high temperatures combin-
ed with lack of adequate rain-
fall.
Digging of cobblers is under-
way in the southeast. Tobacco
fields generally look very good.
Apples, peaches and pears are
sizing well.
