Injures Future Hunting
Charles McLaughlin, the chief
| game biologist of the Massa-
| chusetts Division of Fisheries &
| Game, said, so truly, in the or-
| ganization’s November bulletin:
| “Even though you can’t legally
shoot and eat ‘Maw’ pheasant,
| she’s still the best friend a
pheasant hunter ever had.
“Reason Mrs. Pheasant is so
important to hunting success in
| the future is because every hen
pheasant in the covers come
| spring nesting is good for at
least two legal cocks next hunt-
| ing season.
| “Figures from research stud-
ies carried on by the Division of
Fisheries and Game indicate
that as much as 50 percent of
| the annual legal take of cock
| pheasants is the product of wild
mothers — but the sad fact is
that the study also indicates
that between 40 to 60 percent of
the hen pheasants on a given
area are lost, one way or anoth-
er, even under the watchful eye
of conservation officers who can
not be everywhere at once.
“The ‘shoot first, look after’
boys and their friends, the ‘don’t
give a hoot’ crown, are one of
{ the causes of this loss of hens.
They really hurt pheasant hunt-
| ing.”
Deer Goes Where Food Is
| Says Donald Croft, a Mont-
gomery County game protector,
“I have received many requests
to pick up dead deer, but last
Nov. 2 I got my first to come get
la live one. A large doe had
| crashed through a glass door in
| a restaurant in Lansdale. Hard
hoofs and a slippery floor
brought the animals flight to an

under a kitchen table. Sev-
eral employes held the deer
down and tied its feet together.
When the animal was released
in a wooded area it took off in
a manner to show it was none
the worse for the experience.”
A brother officer, Donald E.
| Miller, quipped: “We know food
| for deer is a serious problem,
but this is the first report of onc
|

actually visiting a restaurant.”
