It has been the habit of many
residents of this area to tramp
up to the summit of ‘Governor
Dick” and there eat a lunch

them, togeter with water to

housebreakers to escape the
penalty which should be admin-
istered.” “If juvenile delin-
quents are permitted to commit
misdeeds without due punish-
ment, other juveniles will know
about it and will be tempted to
endeavor to break the law and
hope to avoid proper punish-
ment therefor.”
“The writer of this story de-
sires to make it clear to the
reader that the opinions on the
subject of housebreaking teen-
agers are his own and do not
reflect the opinion of any per-
sons whose name or names may
or may not happen to appear
herein.”
The writer desires to make it
clear that no part of this story
is intended to be a criticism of
the juvenile court of the Coun-
ty of Lancaster because the wri-
ter has no knowledge whatever
of the record of said court and
has no knowledge of the record
of any association.
The Tower House herein re-
ferred to was formerly used as
a private residence by its own-
er, Clarence Schock. Since Aug.
27, 1953, it is owned by the Mt.
Joy school district, and Clarence
Schock is acting as caretaker of
the property including the en- |
tire tract of 1105 acres. As care-
taker, Clarence Schock is auth-
orized to appoint substitutes: to
help in caring for the property
because of his physical disabili-
ty, which prevents him from
being present on the premises
as often as desirable. Associates
of Clarence Schock in The SICO
Company will assist, and a
watchman has been installed in
the Tower House to guard the
property, the results of which
are hereinabove stated. |
The school district of the
Borough of Mount Joy will not
be required under the terms of
the deed to use any tax money
to pay the cost of maintenance |
of the property. The SICO Com-
pany has contributed for this
purpose and will continue to so
contribute so long as it exists.
Many lovers of Mount Gretna’
are still interested in tramping
up to “Governor Dick”. Accor- |
dingly, it is fitting to forget the
lack of appreciation displayed
by youthful vandals in
destruction at and near “Gov-

peaceful community such as
Mount Gretna,” states Mr.
Schock. Other break-ins and
"wood that is necessary to

SICO Company, under the lead-

look surrounding trees, no mat-
ter how much talled they may !
grow, and obtain the magnifi-
cent view which is there obtain- |
able. This tower will be of |
monolithic reinforced concrete
construction and steel with the |
exception of a small amount of |
pro-
vide the background for the ver-
tical ladders. The ladders will]
be of steel and all else except |
the wood backboard will be of |
concrete. There will be two |

shafts in this structure—one for
going up and one for coming |
down. The dimensions of these
shafts will be 32 in. x 68 in.
and the platforms, located 7 ft. |
4 in. apart, will measure only |
a2 in. x 40 in., leaving a hatch |
for the ladders to pass through |
measuring 28 in. x 32 in. The |
climber will go up on the ver-
tical ladder with its wooden
backboard which makes it saf-
er than any stairway, and the
distance from platform to plat-
form will be only 7 ft. 4 in.
These platforms will give a
resting place and will be big en-
ough to make space for two
people to stand on comfortably
whenever that may be neces-
sary. At each platform there
will be openings in the wall of
the tower to provide sufficient |
light for the climber of the lad-
ders to see.
The top of the reinforced con-
crete roof will be 66 ft. above
the first floor of the tower, and
will be surrounded by an iron
fence 4 ft. high, thereby mak-
ing it impossible for snow to
accumulate on the roof and
melt and penetrate the concrete
structure and freeze and there-
by disintegrate the concrete.
The roof will extend beyond
the outer walls of the tower
not less than one foot, thereby |
providing a cornice from which |
the water will drain without |
running down on the side of |
the tower. |
This tower will be open for |
public use in accordance with a

near its entrance reading as fol- |
lows: “This tower may be used |
only at the risk of the user.” [1
Any person not in the habit | §

he or she can continue to climb |
