News Items From
E. D. Twp. School
The Mid-Winter
Maytown
meeting of
Elementary School
Parents Club will be held Mon-
day, January 25 at 7:45 p. m. in
the high school auditorium,
Samuel Horst, chief of Penn-
sylvania Dept. of Farm and
Home Safety will be the princi-
| ple speaker of the evening. Mu-
sic for the meeting will be furn-
ished by the Parent's Club Mens
Chorus. Refreshments will be
served by the fourth grade mo-
thers. The meeting will be in
charge of Rev. John Hiestand,
president of the club.
Ross Eshleman, a senior, was
successful in the Southern Dis-
trict Band tryouts at Harrisburg
January 9 and has been chosen
to play second trumpet. He will
play at Manheim Central High
{| School under the direction of
Paul Van Bodegraven, guest
conductor. If he obtains a high
rating at Manheim, he will then
have the opportunity to play in
the Eastern State Band at Nor-
ristown.
Four student council mem-
bers and an advisor will go to
Manheim Central High School
to attend the annual conference
of High School Student Coun-
cils January 22. The four stu-
dents are: Ann Young, leader;
Barbara Martin sec’y; Peggy
Wolfe and Nelson Hess. These
people will attend an assembly
program following registration,
group discussion, a dinner and
| a dance. Their duty is to report
back to our student council any
suggestions they may have
learned.
The shorthand students show-
ed a response when given an in-
vitation by their teacher, Mrs.
Betty Lutze, to correspond n
Gregg Shorthand with students
in other states. Mrs. Lutze feels
they will derive pleasure as
well as benefit from the experi-
ence. The following students
are corresponding with people
in the states listed here with

rado; Dot Weber, Minnesota;

Landis, Michigan; Shirley Yor-

January 12 at twelve o'clock,
several boys from the F.F. A.
Club were on WGAL TV. The
group gave demonstrations on
the pruning of young apple
trees which included: tools to
be used, pruning cuts and pro-
cedure, starting and training
the trees, procedure in pruning
older trees and the benefit of
pruning. The narrator for the
program was Richard Hess,
demonstrators were John Her-
shey and Jay Mumma. Person
in charge of supplies and set-up
was Michall Grove. Advisor of
the group is Thomas V. For-
svthe. (
The annual Jr.-Sr. Prom was
held in the high school auditor-
ium on Saturday, January 16th
at 8:00 p. m. The Pattie Burns
Quartette provided the music
for the evening. The following
sophomores served the refresh-
ments: Peggy Houseal, Judy
Smith, Judy Linard, Scott Car-
penter, Ronald Hawthorne, and
George Williams.

Wagner at the Hamilton Home

business trip to New York last
week.
Mrs. Earl Brubaker is a Sur-
gical patient at the General hos-
pital.
Mrs. Lillian Hamilton was
admitted to the General Hospit-
alon Saturday.
Rev. William Wagner of May-
town visited Mr. and Mrs. Geo.
Mumper on Tuesday.
Mrs. Melvin Ryder and son
Bruce spent several days with!
Mrs. Ryder’s father, Mr. Wertz,
near Lititz, last week.

MRS. ROBERT NICKUM
Mrs. Bessie Nickum, seventy-
| two, 14 Fairview St., Mount Joy
widow of Robert Nickum, died
at 1:42 a.m. yesterday in the
Lancaster General Hospital, fol-
lowing an illness of several
months.
She was born in Mount Joy,
a daughter of the late William
and Sarah Way Jackson and
spent all of her life in the bor-
ough. She was a member of the
Macedonia AME Church.
She is survived by two sisters,
Mrs. Kate Simpson, York,
Cora, wife of John Taylor,
Joy, and three brothers, Melvin,
Lancaster; Elmer, Harrisburg,
and Theodore, Alliance, Ohio.
Funeral services were held in
the Macedonia A.M.E. Church
Wednesday afternoon.


MRS. FRANK E. FELKER
| Friday at 4:55 a. m. in St. Jos-
eph’s Hospital after an illness of
eight weeks.
She was born in Mt. Joy Twp.
near Milton Grove, a daughter
of the late Martin and Emma
Shearer Horst, and was a mem-
ber of St. Mark's Evangelical

persons. She was the recipient

wife of Orville Brandt, Man-
heim; also five grandchildren,
five great grandchildren and a
brother, Benjamin Horst, Mt.
Joy.
Funeral services were held in
the Heilig Funeral Home WMon-
day afternoon.
