SOLVE LITTER PROBLEM
Use of built-up litter in the
poultry house helps to solve the |
wet litter problem, reminds’
Carl Dossin, extension poultry |
specialist of the Pennsylvania |
State College. The system!
works best when the house is
not overcrowded, when the
birds do not waste water around
fountains, and with proper ven-
tilation.
AVOID LONG STORAGE —
Apples will not keep too long in
common storage, says Carl Bit-
tner, Penn State extension pom-
ologist. In the unrefrigerated
storage there may be heavy loss
from decay, shriveling, storage
scald, and internal breakdown.
Overripe fruit may look all
right when it comes out of stor-
age but will break down in a
few days.
PRACTICE SAFETY — You
can’t be too careful around ma-
chinery. Penn State extension
agricultural engineers report
that a study in Ohio showed half
of the 79 fatalities studied were
the result of carelessness in op-
erating farm machinery. A fifth
were caused by falls, a tenth in
accidents with livestock, and a
fifth in other accidents.
SPRAYING PAYS — PENN
STATE extension entomolog-
ists, in checking results of ov-
er 60 farm demonstrations,
found spraying with either ben-
zene hexachloride or toxaphene
for control of spittle bugs gave
an increase of half-ton of dry
hay per acre.
GROW SMALL FRUITS —-
If you are planning to start
some small fruit plantings in
the spring, the Pennsylvania
State College Circular 368,
“Growing Small Fruits for
Home Use,” will give useful in-
formation. Get a copy from
your county agricultural agent.
USE EMERGENCY POWER
—When storms cause electric
tractor as a source of operating
the milking machine, say
Penn State extension agricul-
tural engineers.

ment by W. C. Ricedorf. Dupes
