is probably the best food for
cases, for strips of corn growing
many types of game and so it

The purchase of game feed
direct from farmers is not just
a gesture of good will by the
sportsmen; they want to show
their rural friends, in a materi-

A NEW CORN PEST?
Howard F.. Hoffman, widely
experienced game pratector of
Punxsutawney, relates the fol-
lowing:
“During the corn planting
season this spring I received a
complaint from a Jefferson Co.
farmer to the effect that some
type of wildlife was taking a
large amount of the seed corn
he had planted. Naturally, my
first thought was crows or pos-
sibly pheasants. The farmer
thought otherwise, as the corn

had not yet started to come
through the ground. Upon in-
vestigation I found that it was
not the work of birds and that!
the corn rows in many places
were systematically dug up in
many places for a distance of
from one to two rods to even
the full length of the field. In
the soft loose dirt animal tracks
could be plainly seen.
“In order to relieve the great
damage to this corn field at
once, I set three steel traps at
different locations across this
field. Within the next 2 nights
two large raccoons were trap-
ped and the damage ceased at
once. In all my experience this
is the first time that I have ac-
tually known that raccoons
could locate corn in the ground
and would systematically take
it grain by grain. I believe that
this probably has happened
many times in the past, with the
crows and pheasants receiving
all the blame.”
PREDATOR REDUCTION
NECESSARY TO WILDLIFE
INCREASE
Regardless of the number of
small game birds and animals
produced in the wild or artific-
ally propagated and released,
predation is a governing factor
in deciding the number that]
will remain in the coverts for |
the gun. Almost every summer
observers report seeing great
numbers of -rabbits and ring
necks, but by fall a large per-
centage is nowhere to be found.
Wild creatures that disappear
do not all die of disease, nor do |
they vanish into thin air. Nor |
are they all victims of vehicles
on the highways or mechanized |
farm equipment, though “mech- |
anical predators” take a great
toll. In most cases, these small |
birds and animals provide sus-
tenance for predacious animals
and birds, for reptiles and, in
far too many cases, for free-
hunting dogs and cats.
Add to all these natural haz-
ards tne guns and traps of Penn-
sylvania’'s army of game and fur
seekers, sometimes adverse
weather in hatching and winter
seasons, and it becomes appar-
ent that Nature needs much
more help’ from man if ‘there is
to be an annual game and fur
crop for hunters and trappers of
the Commonwealth to’ haryest.
In short, it is necessary to 'sys-
tematically control the state's
oyer-population of predators if
the small game supply is to ap-
