Most of the stitching of the leather on these braces is done by hand. The casual observer would never know it was done this way because it is a very neat stitch which looks as if it was done by machinery. Some of these braces are made of steel, and others of nickel and air- plane aluminum. Of these, Zielke believes ‘the airplane aluminum is the strongest. The padding of these appliances consists of different kinds of leath- er and blankets. There are about 20 different types of leather he uses. Three of which we remember are elk leather for spinai braces, brown elk for leg braces, and calf leather for children’s braces. He has four people employed at present. He wishes that more peo- ple would be interested in this kind of work because there is a great need for this business: He would like to take on two more employeés in the near future. Successful prac- tice suggests that the apprentice serve four years of apprenticeship before going into the business for It really. is a very interesting job, Zielke feels, as just about every job one does is different. A person does not tire as easily at this job as he woyld many others.
