Fire Prevention and Civil
Defense Go
Fire prevention is an important part of civil defense.
an enemy attacks this country, his bombs, whether they or
atomic, high explosive, or ince ndiar y, will cause more damage
by fire than they will by blast.
make it hard for fires to start is a step towards preparing
your community to protect itself if war comes,
The majority of all fires start in
trashpiles, rubbish, or stored odds |
ends that accumulate
the house. Closets, attics, und
cellars are the main source of
home fires, and plain ordinary good
housekeeping 4s a strong line of
defense against them,
Clean out your storage places.
You will be surprised at how many
burnable odds and ends are really
useless to you. Don’t let them
make your home a fire hazard. Get
rid of them. If local welfare
agencies can’t use them, call the
junk man.
Don’t stop when you've cleared
out the inside of your house. Go
after rubbish in youy back yard, in
alleys and in vacant lots near your
home. Collect the rubbish and burn
it. Don't leave it around to burn if
an enemy bombs your city. Be
sure to burn rubbish in metal
containers.
Take a look at your electrical
system. Buy new plugs and cords
if yours are worn. Get advice from
an electrician if your fuses blow
frequently. They may be danger-
ously overloaded. His advice may
prevent a bad fire.
Every winter costly fires are
started by faulty furnaces, stoves,
and other heating plants.

[rusted or eracked pipes and nt.
tings. Look over your heating sys
tem now. If your chimney neods
it, clean it out. If the
pipes and connections are
and rusted, replace them.
Teach your family not to put
magazines, papers, or clothing on
radiators or near open flames. |
Don’t hang flimsy curtains near
your kitchen stove, Don’t allow
lamp shades to contact
with light bulbs. Remember that |
such things don’t have ta touch |
flame to burn. They will catch fire
simply because they are too close |
to the heat for too long. |
Gasoline, benzine, naptha, and |
similar fluids should never be used |
indoors. When mixed with air,
their vapors can be ignited by the |
spark of a light switch or an
electric fan, or the tiny flame of a
pilot light. Keep such fluids in
tightly closed metal containers
outside your home.
And remember: oil-soaked rags,
especially rags that have been
used to spread quick-drying liquids |
such as turpentine, paint thinners,
and some fupniture polishes, can |
[catch fire by themselves. Oily rags |
| shoud be stored in air-tight metal
containers. It is best to keep them

Times Change:. Feed Processing
Being Done at
By IRA MILLER
Farm Electrification Bureau
It doesn’t take a lot of money to
get out of a heap of work in process-
ing feed on the farm. It does take
careful planning though—for such
setups must be designed to meet in-

dividual farm rejuirements. But, the |
time will be wel' speut. and will pay |
off in various ways—less handing |
and lifting, controlled feeding tor- |
mulas and lower grinding costs. |
One large dairyman, we know of, |
estimated that his processing arrange-
lifting |
ment practically eliminated
and has reduced feed handling to |
about 25 or Prior to
30 hours a year.

revamping this chore, his men spent
500 hours annually in lifting 90 tons
of feed by hand. He figures that his
hew setup saves him about $360 a |
year in handling costs, and keeps his |
tractor anc farm truck available for
other work. Before electric motors
took over the feed grinding chore, |
he did this work with a tractor, using
it 100 hours a year. Another 50 hours
was charged up annually to using his
farm truck in hauling whole grain
from various storage buildings.
His setup is larger than would be
requirec on average farms, but can
| be duplicated on a smaller scale in
| most places. First, he stores a year's
supply of shzlled corn and oats—2,000 |
bushels total-—in overhead bins in his
dairy karn. A 1-horsepower feed
grinder is located on the ground floor |
below the bins. Adjacent to the
grinder, and connected to it by a
spout, is a 1-ton mixer, operated by
a 5-horsepower motor. In operation,
grain flows
from the bins into the grinder and
then into the mixer. Because the
mixer is large, it holds enough feed |
for a week. The only hand labor re-
quired is in adding supplements to
the ground feed.
Overhead bins, a small electric mill
and gravity chutes will solve most
feed processing problems. If the mill
is equipped with a blower, the whole
grain (chuted down from overhead
bins) can be ground and blown into
storage bins. Or, the ground feed can
be dropped into a box beneath the
grinder. Some farmers drop it di-
rectly into a feed cart. A small elec-
trically powered portable elevator
will move whole grain into overhead
storage bins. Tilt the front end of the
wagon up with a hoist, or use &
a 4-inch pipe |
move the whole grain, and you've pu
your feed processing chore on a pro-
duction lin2 basis.
