flation in history has always end-

cline in property values, and wide-
spread unemployment. We do not
seem to be wise encugh to halt in-
flation by any other method.

In the first fireworks that fol-
lowed the President’s abrupt unex-
pected dismissal of General Mac-
Arthu- from his four commands in
the Far East. some of the big un-
derlying issues tended to be sub-
merged. Political comment, with a
few exceptions, followed party
lines—the Republicans said it was
a black day fer this country and

the Democrats said the President |
had no alternative. White House |
spokesmen said the General had |
clearly exceeded his authority, and |
intimated he had been deliberately
insuberdinate to his Constitution-
al superiors. A clese associate of
the General denied this flatly. Mac- |
Arthur partisans said the Presi-|
dent had played into the hands of |
the communists and enormously
weakened the free world. MacAr- |
thur opponents said his
greatly enhanced the chances for
a workable peace. |
