Lancaster County's (From Page 1) selling the largest amount of pork. Members start with pigs weighing from 30 to 50 pounds and should be on feed by June 1. Roundup will be sponsored by the Lancaster Live- stock Exchange and held at the Lancaster Stock Yards in Septem- ber. This year there will be a heavy demand for all the pork that can be produced; this is one project which should be considered by every hoy and girl. The out goal is to have 150 members feeding out 400 head of hogs. Capons Members should take at least 50 cockerels of one of the heavy broods of poultry and have them caponized when they are from 6 to 8 weeks of age; this should be done between May 1 and April 1; your County Agent will assist you in caponizing the birds. Birds for the Easter market can be started later in the summer. The demand for all poul- try meat is good and the price ceil- ings will allow a decent profit. Ca- pons are marketed when weighing from 7 to 10 pounds. Capon club members in 1942 made an average profit per bird of $1.10; this is a very popular project and requires a small investment. Goal—100 members. Home Garden The importance of the family gar- den in the coming year is greater than before; we realize that nearly all farms have a garden but is it large enough and does it produce the variety of vegetables needed for the family for the entire year? It is suggested that members have at least 1500 square feet of garden for a family of three; for each ad- ditional member in the family have another 500 square feet; grow at least 15 varieties of vegetables. Farm girls should enroll in the home can- ning project and can the surplus; with the government taking a large part of the canned and dried fruits and vegetables, this project is very important this year. County Goal is to have 100 garden projects. HOME ECONOMICS 4-H Canning Club 25 jars of fruit and vegetables in- cludes 10 jars of fruits, 7 jars of to- matoes, 3 jars of greens, 3 jars of other vegetables.
