BLACK CURRANT IS NURSE OF
WHITE PINE BLISTER RUST

The European black currant i !
a public nuisance, because it acts
as an advance guard in spreading
the white pine blister rust, a disease
of foreign origin which is destruc-
tive to all of our American white
(or five-leafed) pines, says Samuel
B. Detwiler chief blister-rust spec-
ialist of the United States Depart-!
ment of Agriculture.
The blister rust requires two dis-
tinetly different kinds of host plants
for completing its life cycle. The
spores that infect the pines are pro-
duced on the leaves of currant or
gooseberry bushes and transmitted
to the pines through the air. In |
turn, the currants and gooseberries
become infected from the spores
produced on the pines. While all
species of currant and gooseberry
plants take the disease to some ex-
tent, the European black currant is|
so susceptible that a single spot on
one leaf may completely spread the
disease to the entire plant as well
as to other near-by plants of the
same species. Thus the scattered
windblown spores which may travel
hundreds of miles and not establish
the rust on other species of cur-
rants do infect the European black
and set up new centers of infection.
For this reason the European black
currant has been called the ‘nurse
plant” of blister rust and outlawed
by the States in which white pines
are important forest crops. i
The white pines in the United
States that are endangered by blis-
ter rust have a cash timber value of
approximately $550,000,000, while
the lumber value of this timber is
many times greater. This does not
take into account the values of
trees of these species used as orna-
mentals and potentially greater
value of the young pines for the
future timber crops. The money val-
ue of the black currant plantings of

OYSTER LAW VIOLATION

Nineteen oyster dealers have!
been prosecuted so far this year!
for violating the State Oyster Law, |
according to the report from the
Bureau of foods and Chemistry,
Pennsylvania Department of Agri- |
culture.
The present Oyster Law requires |
that all oysters be sold at retail
numerical count instead of by the
pint or quart. This regulation, which
became effective in 1925, makes it
impossible to add large quantities
of water to oysters as was some-
times done under the old method of
sales. It also makes it impossible for
the dealer to adulterate by adding
ice and selling ice water with the
oysters, i
