SANITATION: In these days of
keen competition and high efficiency
the survival of the fittest is becoming
more of a personal problem than
ever. By the term personal problem
in this connection I mean that each
individual must do his share in order
to conserve the whole. Right living
has its own personal and individual
rewards, but its a difficult matter to
live right and secure the proper re-
sults from a sanitary method of liv-
ing when your neighbor across the
road will do nothing to protect you
from the results of his disregard.
For example: one man in a com-
munity has equipped all of his farm
buildings with modern and sanitary
devices. If every farm in the com-
munity were similarly equipped
there would be no flies to annoy his
horses or cattle. There need be no
mosquitoes, no rats, no mice, no hog
or chicken cholera and on tubercular
cattle.
There would’ be little, if any, con-
tagious diseasés in the community.
Mow why should nov That one man
be able to compel all the rest to
properly safeguard his premises from
the causes of disease and destruction
which their unsanitary methods pro-
pogate. When a man maintains a
nuisance, a condition which is a men-
neighborhood will breed enough ty-
phoid flies to indirectly infect the
whole community. To compell the
careless one to keep the manure in
a concrete pit that has been properly
I covered and screened, would not on-
ly conserve the value of the manure
as a fertilizer but would prevent the
flies from breeding in it.
