RE —— Measure the Road's Crown Not always when the side of the | road is lower than the centre is that [ road properly crowned. If the side | slope of the roadway were measur- led it would frequently be found that | the gradual slope from centre to |side is not uniform in its descent, | some portions of the road nearer its centre being below other portions [farther away from the centre. Roads have a tendency to develop “shoulders” at each side of the used roadway These interfere with proper drainage and should be guarded against. The eye cannot be relied upon to detect a shoulder in process of developing nor are ex- pensive instruments necessary. straight board, half the width of Ty roadway and a level will suffice, The operation is simple. Rest one end of the board on the centre line of the road, the level placed in the middle of the board, and bring the board to a perfect level. If the end of the board does not continue to rest on the centre line some por- tion of the cross-section is higher than the centre and is acting as pivot to the board, evidence that doe road is defective in crown. Should the end of the board rest on the centre line as required it can be found if the crown of the road is perfect. For a perfectly uniform slope each foot of the board from the centre line of road should be a great er distance above the roadway than the leveled board is nearer to the roadway than another portion clos- er to the centre line, then a ‘“‘should- er” is forming at that point and should be removed as it interferes with the ready flow of water from the roadway to the side ditches. Surface drainage of the roadway affects mainly the maintenance of the road and is provided for by giv- ing a uniform slope to the sides of the road, the centre being the high- est. The proper crown varies with the roadway and the nature of whether the road is on a hill or level plain The steeper the longi- tudinal slope of the road the more important the crown for there is a tendency for the water to run down the wheel tracks rather than to the sides. If water once begins to run down the centre of the roadway it is but a short time until the road is gullied out The use of the level previously mentioned will prevent this. On apnroximately level stretches a crown of one inch to each foot should be given and on grades this hould be increased to correspond with the steepness of the grade. On a roadway sixteen feet wide this would make the centre eight inches higher than the sides (not the bot- tom of the side ditch but the end of the side slope where the ditch com- mences.) Frequently the following rule is given for crowing country roads at one fourth the distance from the centre give seven-eights of the total rise and at one-half the distance give five-eights the total rise This readily can be determin ed with the level and board. With the approach of the season hich is hardest upo: the roads d officials should begin i yusy and give the crown of the re ee A rr The Trials of a Traveler ym a traveling salesman,” writes E.
