Well Balanced Ration Is What Countr
In Building Up Individuality and
Quality of Swine
There are too many farmers and
even breeders who seem to hold the
{dea that a pig can feed himself and
that their whole duty ends when they
have supplied the food
A good feeder can keep Improving
his herd in quality and Individuality
and is therefore progressive and suc-
cessful, while the poor feeder may
take the best to be had, and in flve
generations be back to scrubs. This
is the difference between good feed
ing and poor feeding. This is where
the feeder has more Influence than
the feed
It is a clean waste to glve the pig
80 to 90 his feed in corn
more than
needed in
per cent, ofl
or meal when perhaps not
one-half that amount is
building the various structures of his
body.
The balanced ration {8 what counts.
This 18 intended to be composed of
such materials as are needed by the
pig to build all of his growth, to fur-
nish the bone and the muscle, and
all parts in proper proportion It is
shown time and again that two val-
ible feeds, when combined, make a
better feed than either one separate-

Potato Bugs.
George G. Pierce of Batavia, N. Y.,
last spring sprinkled sulphur on fresh-
ly cut potato seed and says his plants
were not troubled during this season
by potato bugs or blight. He did not
spray at all, but is not prepared to
say that the sulphur kept his vines
healthy.
Helpful Suggestions for Proper Main- |
tenance of Trees—Trim, Spray
and Cultivate.
The old, neglected orchard with its
dead trees and wormy apples Is &a

spray, cultivate and get big returns.
Keep the orchard land in good tilth
The trees can be set as soon as the
leaves fall.
Plant a cover crop in the orchard
Rye, barley, wheat and oats are good
non-leguminous plants, but the leg-
umes are better,
Prune off all dead or weak branches.
Thin out the tops to let the sun in
Burn the diseased branches so that
the other trees will not be contarai-
nated. It will also be advisable to
open the heads of peach trees, remove
surplue branches and take off water
sprouts
The soil for orchard purposes must
be well prepared and better results
may be expected if this is done some
time before the trees are to be trans

Crin n clover unquestionably is the

grow well everywhere. It has always
succeeded with me in this locality.
But I have found the black cowpea
and the hairy vetch to grow fairly
well everywhere in Pennsylvania.
Corn-Growing Clubs.
Five thousand boys entered the
corn growng contest of Virginia last
year. Corn growing clubs are organ-
ized by the superintendents and
school teachers in the various coun-
ties. Each boy was given a measured
acre and received instructions from
an agent of the agricultural depart-
ment.
