A VISIBLE PORTION
OF A ROMANCE

with her eyes turned upward and for-
ward as though looking for some one.
She was always alone, and I never saw
her speaking to any one. There was
a mingled melancholy and savage look
on her face, as though she was brood-
ing over some wrong. The day before
we reached the American coast 1 saw
her looking, as usual, up at the deck
on which I stood. Presently the lovers
came up, the sunshine lighting the
girl's smile. Suddenly 1 saw the Ital-
fan below tear a knife from her waist

and throw it at them. I'he y.ang man
must have seen the act, fur he put
| himself between his companion and
| the danger and received the knife in
{ his right breast. 1 saw the red blood
| moistening his white flannel coat and
| thought for a moment he was killed.
Lhe §
he

| Drawing with him,

| rushed to the steps le x to the deck
| below. She se I hardly to have
| realized what bad happened.
| 1 was the o one who had seen the
| hurling of sile, and I kept the
| secret. I saw the ship's doctor hurry-

|
| ing to the young man's stateroom, and
| when he came out I asked him if his
| patient was fatally hurt. He had evi-
| dently been pledged not to talk, for
| he pretended not to know of any in-
jury.
The next morning I saw the girl—
her smile had left her—going ashore
with her parents. 1 saw nothing of
her lover, nor &id I gain any informa-
tion about him, Indeed. I did not try.
