Borough Council wa?
day evening with Mes
necker, Zeller, Mumma and 9
er present. A communication was
received from the Selicitor asking
Council what it intended doing
with the poll tax proposition made
by the ‘Western Union and Postal
Telegraph Companies. These com-
panies refuse to pay their poll tax
of 50 cents per pole but offered to
pay 10 cents for every pole in the
borough. Referred to the solicitor
Burgess J. W. Shrite reported
that his collections for the past
councilmanic month amounted to
$62.50.
Mr..Greider of the Street com-
mittee reported as follows: Macad-
amizing on Columbia Avenue is
now completed from Delta to Bar-
bara street; pipe on Walnut street
at Columbia Avenue does not car-
ry off the surface water, jd rec-
ommended that the CL nestoga
Traction Company be notified to
inches. Re-
ferred to the Street committee.
Macadamizing on Old Market St.
is completed tc |Pube’s crossing
and that Mr. Bube still runs water
into the gutter on said street.
Mr. Greider stated that some time
ago he investigated the waste wat-
er situation from the Market street
sewer and although there was no
surface water in sight at the time,
a large amount of water was flow-
ing from the sewer pipes just men-
tioned. Also that he understood
that individuals had connected
with the borough’s sewerage and
for that reason would recommend
that the borough lay pipes on Old
Market street to carry off Mr.
Bube's waste water. Recommen-
dation stricken off.
Chairman Longenecker -stated
that complaint was made relative
to the condition of West Main
street in front of the Miller proper-
ty and also the Bopp property.
The clerk was instructed to notify
these parties to put the street i

deniy,
one of the
tion of dismay a™
the wind almost sho
panion a sentence the TS
which was “broken.”
The two girls took refuge in the lee
of the Tract Society building and held
a consultation. A stream of people
was passing along Nassau street, and
the nature of the mishap seemed to
call for delicate treatment. Then,
while the girl who had shouted held
the umbrella turned toward the rush-
{ng throng, the other girl knelt down
on the wet sidewalk and began fum-:
bling with her companion’s skirt.
A dapper young man stepped out of
the passing throng. “Pardon me,
Miss, but can I be of any assistance?”
he asked, raising bis hat.
The feminine reparr department
came to an abrupt halt. “No, thank
you,” came in chorus from both girls.
“But, really, you should not kneel in
the rain like that,” pursued the young
man. “Do let me fix the shoelace.”
“Please, please go ’way,” implored
the kneeling one. “It isn’t her shoe
lace—"
And the young man lost himself in
the crowd.
INFLUENCE OF GREAT MUSIC
it Can Move More Profoundly Than
Any of Nature's Great
Voices.
Great music is a psychical storm,
igitating to unimaginable depth the
nystery of the past within us, says
Lafcadio Hearn. Or we might say it
s a produgious incantation, every dif-
‘erent instrument and voice making
separate appeal to different billions of
prenatal memories. There are tones
that call up all the ghosts of youth
and joy and tendencies—there are
tones that evoke all phantom pain of
perished passion—there are tones that
resurrect all dead sensations of ma.
jesty and might and glory—all expired
exultations—all forgotten magnanimi-
ties. Well, may the influence of music
seem inexplicable to the man who idly
dreams that his life began less than
8 hundred years ago! But the mystery
lightens for whomsecever learns that
the substance of self'is older than the
sun. He finds that music is a Necro-
mancy; hedecls that to every ripple of
melody yw billow of harmony,
2 rithin him out of the
