The incident here related happened
the other night at a Chicago boarding
house. One of the boarders is an Eng-
lishman, who talks with much wisdom
on many subjects. He is particularly
strong on military matters, and one of
his favorite pastimes is to criticise se-
oral
generals
verely the tactics of famous
in recent campaigns. He thinks noth-
ing at all of “calling down” Gen. “Joe”
Wheeler or Gen. MacArthur, and not
even his own Lord Kitchener escapes
his nimble tongue.
The other evening at dinger, says the
Chicago Tribune, he happened to take

up the fight at San Juan hill and after
abusing the leaders to his heart’s con-
tent he began to pick flaws in the cour-
age and military discipline shown by
the men. The other boarders, who |
knew the uselessness of arguing with
the great military critic, were listen-
ing in broad silence.
It happened that one of the negro
waiters employed in the boarding
house was in the dining-room at the
time the of the American

anyway ?”
“Well, sah,” the negro went on. *‘Of
course I don’t much about it, sah. But
I suved ten years in the Twenty-fifth
regiment, sah, and I was in dat chawge
myself. My own brother was killed
right beside me in front of de block-
house, sah. Dat’s all I know about it.”
The other boarders broke out into
