Collectors seek
old box cameras

Q. “Tucked away in the attic we discovered a marigold
candle lamp in the Grape and Cable pattern.”—Mrs. W. R.,

A. If you want to light up the life of a Carnival Glass
buff, simply tease him with a candle lamp from the famed
Northwood Glass Company. Generally, their ‘N” within a
circle trademark may be found on the candlestick portion
of these fantastic finds. The Northwood firm excelled in
creating Carnival glass confections in the early 1900s. Many
flea marketeers consider their green, purple and marigold
candle lamps to be just a shade above the rest. Value guide:

Q. “Prices on early box cameras would be appreciated.” —
Henry, Medford, Ore.
A. Flea market shoppers battle for early box cameras of
leather, wood, cardboard and metal. Even some of the
plastic models from the 1930s fetch snappy returns. Those
dating prior to World War | often bring prices capable of
making photographica collectors shudder! Value guide:

Q. “Our sled figural napkin ring is marked ‘Wilcox Silver
Plate Co.’ “—Mr. and Mrs. B. R., Hattiesburg, Miss.
A. Once the first napkin ring patent was granted in
1869, numerous American firms began producing these
silver novelties. One active maker was the Wilcox Silver
Plate Co. of Meriden, Conn., established by a group of
investors in 1865. Originally, the firm was organized as
the Wilcox Britannia Co. In 1898 they became a part of the
International Silver Co. Figural napkin rings fetch fancy
returns and your old-fashioned sled sells for a neat $60.
Q. “I just missed purchasing a Buck Rogers ‘Dangerous
Mission’ pop-up book for $51’—Bill, Parsons, Kan.
A. Blue Ribbon Books, Inc., undoubtedly prompted by
the successful launching of the Buck Rogers comic strips
and radio programs, introduced two pop-up books related
to this space hero in 1935. “Buck Rogers in Strange
Adventures in the Spider Ship” featured Buck and Wilma
in three eye-popping pop-ups. A smaller book “‘Buck
Rogers in a Dangerous Mission” also pictured them in
“mission impossible” type feats. Missing out on a bargain
priced “Dangerous Mission’ pop-up is a ‘close encounter of
Carnival Glass Candle Lamp
the wrong kind,” for prices presently hover in the $40 to
$50 vicinity!
