Mr. William Balabanow, with the Consumer Protec- tion Agency, talked to the group regarding the pur- pose of the agency. He also outlined the steps to take if someone has problems with a piece of merchandise or a contract. Two ladies from the Office of Aging also attended the meeting, signing up mem- bers and distributing the new Discount Booklets. President Joe Shaeffer called the business session to order, Teressa Heisey presented the secretary’s report, and Almeda Hostet- ter read the treasurer’s report. Minnie Tucker, of [continued from front page] the next phase could begin. ‘Phase one’’ is virtually completed. Under the orig- inal plan, a permanent sewage treatment plant and storm drainage system would have to be completed before ‘‘phase two’’ could begin. Also, under the original plan, a large percentage of the ‘‘phase two'’ housing was to have been single-family dwell- ings. Developer Julius Goldfarb of Maytown Associates, builders of Country Village on the former Endslow farm, asked that the sewage improvements be postponed and that a larger percentage of multiple-family units— semi-detached homes, townhouses, etcetera—be permitted. Mr. Goldfarb explained that expensive homes are not selling well today because of high interest rates, and that profits from the low-income housing are necessary to raise money to complete the sewer and drainage improvements in the plan. Citizens voiced a wide range of objections. Many said they'd no idea that a project of this size had been contemplated in Maytown. Others worried that local schools, utilities, roads, police protection, etcetera would have to be drastically expanded at taxpayer ex- pense, and that low-income newcomers would not add enough money to the tax base for improved services. Dr. John Brown, of the local planning commission, said that the planners were unhappy with the proposed variance, and recommended denial by the township supervisors. Dr. Brown said that he preferred ‘‘natural, gradual’ growth outward from Maytown, and that the developer’s proposals left ‘““many unanswered ques- tions."’ the Sunshine Committee, reported two cards sent to shut-ins during the past month. Members signed up for a bus trip to Longwood Gardens, scheduled for Friday, December 12. The bus will leave from the rear of the United Methodist Church at 1:00 pm. It will stop at Frey's Christmas store and Harvest Drive restaurant for a family style dinner, and then travel to Longwood Gardens for the evening. The annual Leisure Club Christmas party and dinner will be held at Hostetters Monday evening, December 15, beginning at 6:00 pm. A special entertaining pro- gram will be part of the evening’s fun. Maytown meeting (cont.) If the variance is denied, the whole project may well be indefinitely postponed, since the original plan seems to be economically unfeasible at this time. Alternatively, the developer could appeal a negative decision by the supervisors. The supervisors will make their decision within sixty days.
