UNITED DISPOSAL 367-1867 Christmas tree safety The Lancaster County Consumer Protection Com- mission has composed a written report on Christmas tree safety. Anyone that would be interested in this free information should contact the Commission's office at 299-7921 or by visiting the ofice at 900 East King Street, Lancaster. A few things to remember when selecting a Christmas tree: 1. Check the tree for freshness. Brittle branches and shedding needles are a sign of dryness; fresh needles bent between the fingers won't break. 2. When you bring the tree home, keep it outside (if possible) until you are ready to decorate it. Keep its base in water. When the tree is brought in, cut the butt end diagonally one or two inches above the original cut. Place the tree in a sturdy holder with a wide base. 3. Fill the holder with water until the cut line is covered and keep the water at this level while the tree is in use, refilling it every day if necessary. 4. Set up the tree a good distance away from any heat source. S. Dispose of the tree when the needles begin to fall off in large quantities. This is a sign that it is becoming dangerously dry. The Lancaster County Consumer Protection Com- mission would like to wish everyone a safe and pleas- ant holiday.
