ONLY $1.00!! Royal Doulton figure: $365 By Dan D’Imperio Q. Can you enlighten me about my Royal Doulton fig- urine Gladys, HN1740?—Joanne, Hayward, Calif. A. Members of the collecting fraternity diligently search for discontinued Royal Doulton figurines. Gladys, intro- duced in 1935 and withdrawn by 1949, rates as an Art Deco darling. The designer Leslie Harradine captured the con- temporary woman in this finely modeled figurine. It is not a standing figure, but rather depicts the head, shoulders and folded arms of a woman, the arms resting on a plinth. She has reddish hair and a green dress, which blend beauti- fully with the decidedly Deco theme. Value guide: Gladys, 5 inches, $365. Q. Several years ago | acquired a mint condition Queen Elizabeth launch brochure. Is this a sought-after item?— Mr. L. J., Gainesville, Fla. A. The elegant brochure issued to commemorate the launching of the Queen Elizabeth on Sept. 27, 1938, is def- initely a collectors’ delight. The naming ceremony was per- formed by the Queen Mother. Because King George VI was unable to attend the affair, a letter of apology appears within the brochure. Photographs of the construction process also adorn the pages of this memento. At present fine condition copies of this launch brochure sail into private collections at prices hovering around the $100 mark! Fry [secretary] Donegal School Board RB % “GLADYS” ROYAL DOULTON FIGURINE Q. We found several old cherry stoners in the barn. Are they of interest to collectors?—Mr. and Mrs. H. L., Bloomington, li. A. The United States Patent Office was besieged with new inventions for labor-saving kitchen gadgets during the 1800s. Many pertained to improvements in the field of cherry stoners. As might be expected, each new patent promised to remove the seed from the cherry with a min- imum of disfiguring or cutting. There were crank handled and spring-driven models equipped with regulation devices. Any cherry stoner bearing a firm name or patent date is especially cherished. Value guide: cherry seeder, clamp- type, cast iron, $35. Q. Would it be possible to assist me in evaluating a col- lection of Parker pens?—Ben, Newberry, Mich. A.
