School board member Jefferson Hartzler
speaks to Business & Professional Women
Dr. Jefferson Hartzler, a
member of the Donegal
School Board and a mathe-
matics professor at Penn
State’s Capital Campus, was
guest speaker for the
September dinner meeting
of the Mount Joy Business
and Professional Women’s
Club. The meeting was held
at Hostetter’s Dining Hall.
Dr. Hartzler’s topic was:
“A Strategy for Improve-
ment of Public Education in
the ’80’s.”” He told the
group that elementary edu-
cation is in better shape
today than secondary educa-
tion. ‘“‘High school age
pupils have a tendency to
waste time,” Dr. Hartzler
said.
“Is it the fault of the
parents?’ he asked the
group. He answered his
question by stating the
responsibility lies with the
parent. “‘If we demand high
quality education, we will
get it.”’
The program was ar-
ranged by the Foundation
committee, with Mrs. Carol
Lambert as chairperson.
The project for the month
. was a white elephant sale.
Maxine Maxwell presented
several vocal selections,
accompanied by Kay Wolge-
muth.
Mrs. John Fry, president
of the Mount Joy B.P.W.,
conducted the business
session.
The club voted to sponsor
Girl Scout Troop #55 and to
participate in a table setting
contest sponsored by the
David’s Furniture Store,
Elizabethtown, October 19
thru November 1.
Donna Hay, girl of the
month for Donegal High
School, was introduced to
the club. She and her
mother, Mrs. Paul Hay,
were guests of the club.
Mrs. Robert Bookwalter
was elected delegate to ‘the
Fall District meeting to be
held at York Valley Inn on
October 18 and 19. Serving
as alternates are Mary Jane
Hoffer and Mrs. James R.
Baker. The president, Mrs.
Fry, is automatically a
delegate.

appointed first vice presi-
dent due to the resignation
of Mrs. Ada Thompson.
