The Donegal School dis-
trict began an additional
kindergarten class in the
Mount Joy area, following
the opening of the school
year, it was announced at
last Thursday’s board meet-
ing.
The new class was created
because Seiler and Grand-
view had an enrollment of 84
students in only three
classes during the first three
days of school.
Mrs. Elizabeth Baley
transferred from her half-
time position at Riverview
to a full-time place at Seiler.
Mrs. Joanne K. Fry,
R.D.1, Mount Joy, began as
a half-time substitute at
Riverview.
Mrs. Fry is a graduate of
Penn State University and
State College High School.
She has done post graduate
work at Shippensburg $tate
College. She taught several
months at Riverview last
year.
In addition, Miss Cath-
arine Zeller will receive
$5.50 an hour to tutor
in a bilingual program. Miss
Zeller will teach three
Cuban students and several
Vietnamese in Grandview,
the junior high and the high
school if the help is needed.
The board also voted to
send letters to various
government officials re-
questing federal reimburse-
ment for the bilingual
program.
Mrs. Sharon Hobbs was
hired at $3.30 an hour to
serve as a science aide in the
four elementary buildings
during the year. Mrs. Hobbs
will work three hours per
day, four days a week.
In other personnel mat-
ters, the board accepted the
resignation of Mrs. Kath-
leen Hughes, Seiler grade 4
teacher, to be effective
September 26, 1980.
The board also approved a
request for a half-year
sabbatical leave to Mrs. Lou
Peters, who plans to travel
to various southern and mid-
west states.
In other business, the
board learned that the
district enrollment dropped
by SO students this year.
The total number of
students in all buildings is
2,513 this fall, compared
with 2,563 at the same time
last year.
It was also reported that
the first fact finding meeting
between the Donegal Edu-
cation Association and the
school board will be held
Thursday, Sept. 25, at 4 pm.
A request for an assistant
band director was denied.
The board also voted to
discontinue rifle as an inter-
scholastic activity since
there is no coach available.
The PIAA no longer recog-
nizes the activity, the board
was told, and the Donegal
facilites have been poor for
league competition.
School board meeting (cont.)
The board voted to accept
the Lancaster County Vo-
Tech Joint Operating Com-
mittee resolutions of the
proposed building project.
This could involve the
building of another Vo-Tech
school in Lancaster County.
The board’s building,
maintenance and supply
committee was given the
task of coming up with a
recommendation for the use
of the old board minute
books from the district.
Local libraries and historical
societies are interested in
having the books.
The board heard from two
residents requesting addi-
tional bus transportation
September 24, 1980
for elementary students.
Mrs. Carol Hebbe requested
the bus for students in the
Vista Heights area of
Maytown, and Mrs. Julie
Hamilton for the end of
North Barbara Street in
Mount Joy. The proper
officials will study both
areas.
An emergency lighting
system has been replaced in
the high school, it was
announced.
The Band Club, board
members were told, is
planning to sponsor the
Maynard Ferguson Band in
concert in the high school
auditorium on October 29, 8
to 10 pm.
