Did You Hear? §§§ Steve Meszaros, now a freshman at Bloomsburg State College, set a new school record for the ‘““Huskies’” in a football game against Shippensburg last Saturday when he returned the second half kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. Steve is a 1980 graduate of Donegal High School majoring in Pre- Dentistry. §§§ One biological rule states that the larger the animal, the slower the heartbeat. A robin’s heart, for example, beats S70 times a minute, while an elephant’s beats only 34 times. But it all evens out in the end because another rule, according to Ranger Rick’s Nature Maga- zines, says that most large animals live longer than smaller ones. So, from birth until death all hearts, fast and slow, beat about the same total number of times. §§§ A box turtle can support on its shell a weight 200 times its own, according to Ranger Rick’s Nature Mag- azine. To equal this feat, a person would have to be able to carry two African elephants on his back. §8§ Scientists have discovered that elephants purr, just like cats, reports the National Wildlife Federation. For years it was thought that the sounds were related to digestion, but now we know that elephants purr when they are out of sight from one another. If they stop purring, it’s a sign to other elephants that danger is near. §8§ Births ALLEN, Mr. and Mrs. David (Dorothy Shirk), Mount Joy RD1, a daughter at General Hospital last week.
