THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS
Again, as promised, Jesus came
To cure the sick, the blind, the lame;
Wending His way from door to door
As gospel’s writers told of yore;
Until, by hunger overwrought,
His eye above a restaurant caught
This sign: ‘‘Entree—the place to eat.
Here all are welcome—no bare feet.”
Sadly He turned and walked away,
(With what foreboding who can say?)
Until He passed ‘‘The Peoples’ Bank,”’
Loud with the sound of money-clank;
And entering, said: ‘‘How now do ye
Subserve the trade of usery!”’
Impetuous hands upon Him bore
And hurried roughly to the door.
Upon a street He paused to speak
Of mercy for the poor and weak,
Which they who heard presumed a fad
And laughing, said: ‘‘The man is mad.”
Then Jesus wept and went away
Into the wilderness to pray,
And know the vantage, duly summing,
