Baseball team defeats LC & GS Last Tuesday the Donegal Indians baseball team beat Lancaster Catholic, 7 to 2. Monte Maurer had only one bad inning as pitcher, and that was immdediately after rain had temporarily inter- rupted the game. On Thursday the Indians won again, with Mitch Johnson pitching. They beat Garden Spot S to 2. Johnson had nine strike- outs and walked two, one of those due to hitting the batter. Both runs scored by Garden Spot were unearn- ed; one occurred as a result of an error. Steve Neal hit a three-run homer, to supply all the runs needed by the Indians. Neal had two for three that day, his other hit being a double. On Saturday the Indians lost to Lampeter-Strasburg, 1-2. Donegal scored its run in the first inning, when Daryl Risberg hit safely, Mike Frey bunted, and Monte Maurer drove in a run. Lampeter-Strasburg scor- ed its two runs in the second inning, the only shaky inning that pitcher Steve Neal had. There were no more runs scored after the second inning. Coach Al Brooks said, ‘‘It was a real good ball game, very well played.” This Thursday Donegal ends the season with a final game in Manheim with Manheim Central. Softball, 2 in a row The girls’ softball team had a two game winning streak last week, defeating both Lebanon and a strong Conestoga Valley team. On Tuesday, the girls beat Lebanon 12-11. ‘‘We had about 20 hits to their 11,” said Coach Cliff Shank. The following girls all had three hits for Donegal: Sheree Gallagher, Sherry Derr, Brenda Hershey and Marty Miller. Wednesday evening the team beat CV, 12-5, a team with a much better record than Donegal. ‘“We had a strong defensive game a- gainst CV,”” said Shank. ‘““Marty Miller was doing an Donegal band elects officers The Donegal High School band has elected new officers for the 1980-81 school year. President is Trish Barnitz; vice president, Donna Hay; secretary/treasurer, Sherry Frey; and historian, Kaye Wolgemuth. PRP RT EERE RYE RE, NY, yy excellent job as catcher, throwing several runners out. It was our best game of the year.” Offensively the leaders were Sheree Gallagher, 3 for 4, Marty Miller and Theresa Meyers, both 2 for 4. Donegal lost to Lebanon Catholic Thursday night, 3-10. “We didn’t hit well enough to win,’’ said Shank of the team’s 7 hits. Sherry Derr went 2 for 3 against Lebanon Catholic. The girls also lost to Hempfield Monday night, 2-6. They got 2 runs in the first and left the bases loaded several times after that. ‘“‘We were hitting but not at the right time. Our hits were too spread out.” Marty Miller went 2 for 2 and Brenda Hershey was 2 for 3. “We played much better ball last week,”’ concluded Shank. ‘“Much better than we have played all season. And with no seniors on the team we have everyone coming back next year. Things look good for next season.’’ The girls play their two final games this week. Wednesday they face ELCO and Friday they meet Cedar Crest, both away. ETATATEATA ‘Fee, fi, fo, fum. I smell the Blood of an Englishman! Netmen win 3 as predicted Donegal’s tennis team was undefeated last week (as Coach Bill Loercher pre- dicted they would be in last week's Times.) On Monday the Indians beat Conestoga Valley S-2. Pat Moran, Fred Straub, and Kevin Heistand won their singles matches, and Moran and Straub, and Crider and Newcomer won their doubles matches. On Wednesday the Indi- ans took Pequea Valley, 42 to 3%2. John Crider, Fred Straub, and Kevin Hiestand won their singles matches, and Crider and Newcomer and Moran and Straub won at doubles. Then, on Thursday the Indians annihilated Columb- ia, 7-0. With those three consec- utive wins in one week, the Indians concluded a season that began less impressive- ly. Coach Loercher saw considerable improvement as the season progressed. Trackmen do well in county meet Coach Rudy Milovanovic was well pleased with the performances of his Indian trackmen in the county meet at Millersville last Saturday. ‘Everyone was primed for that meet,”’ he said. Steve Meszaros placed second ‘in the high hurdles and fifth in the intermediate hurdles. In addition, Steve placed fifth in the 100 meter dash. Vince Curry would have taken third in the 400, had he not been disqualified by a judge who said Vince’s feet touched a white line mark- CETERA TREN R ECE ER PR DD ing his lane. His time was a new record for him: 51.88. He did even better in the 1600 meter relay: 51.6. This Friday and Saturday the Indian trackmen will go to Shippensburg for the district meet. . . | . £7 FFF PRE E LRP NENy
